Polish People Not Responding to Online Gaming Ban
Even with their hardest efforts against online gambling, the Polish government has not managed to stop its citizens from betting offshore. In the past 12 months, Poland banned online gambling, including online casinos offering free slot games and sportsbooks, and threatened to prosecute anyone that was involved in such acts as well as marketing and advertising for these companies. This new law aimed to prosecute gamblers who use foreign-hosted gambling websites to place bets or even play free slot machines. Many other governments around the globe have also tried these bans but have been ignored by most users. Reports have stated that even with the new law, Polish people are now utilizing online gambling sites more than ever before.
In 2009, Polish citizens had spent over $1 billion on online gambling, which is 50% more than on land-based casinos and other betting shops. When the year 2010 rolled along, Poles had increased that number by half a million dollars which is a lot to say about the numbers back in 2009, when online betting was still legal.
Even with the ban, Polish people have seen a dramatic increments in online gambling and have strongly ignored the ban. Thus far, the Polish government hasn’t reacted to these discoveries. At first, anti-gambling efforts by politicians pushed for the creation of a list of online casinos that violated the ban in hoped of blocking them. However, this internet censorship attempt was met with sharp criticism and the plan was dropped. These days, several sources state that a new plan has been outlined to amend the current law to fully allow the prosecution of the gamblers who play on the illegal internet gambling websites. Another proposed amendment is directed towards claiming personal jurisdiction over any overseas gambling websites who illegally advertise in Poland. Doing so would allow the Poland government to prosecute the offenders wherever their companies are based.
