First UIGEA Conviction regarding Online Casinos Payment Processor
Daniel Tzvetkoff is the first criminal indicted for UIGEA violations. Tzvetkoff, a 27 year old man from Australia, is facing charges for bank fraud, conspiracy to operate and finance illegal gambling business and more over, for processing false fund transfers in violation of UIGEA. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act came into full effect in 2006 but has been around for a number of years now. The UIGEA clearly states that online casino players are not criminals themselves but the law does target online payments processors. UIGEA basically requires for all financial institutions to deny any and all payments to online gambling websites.
Daniel Tzvetkoff gained the trust of many of online casinos and sportsbooks operators when he first introduced his company to the industry. He allegedly deceived banks – which have bans on internet credit card gambling – into believing the online gambling transactions were actually ordinary transactions.
However, when things started to go wrong for him, many online gambling business were left with millions of dollars in debt. Tzvetkoff was eventually picked up by the United States authorities in Las Vegas. He is facing up to 75 years in prison on a variety of charges, including ones related to violating the UIGEA and the possible action of helping to launder over $500 million.
Tzvetkoff was recently released on bail but the details behind his release are not being made public. Some speculations are pointing towards the idea of Tzvetkoff cooperating with the US authorities and to help them fight internet gambling crime. However, there are still many online gambling websites – including online casinos that offer players the chance to place bets on slots and poker and also sports book with the possibility of NFL and MBL betting – that continue to operate in the US despite the UIGEA and will continue fighting to make the business legal and safe.
