To avoid this the casino sets a certain parameter of forced bets known as wagering requirements or playthrough requirements. What this entails is that the player must wager the deposit and bonus a number of times, in order to complete a total number of real money bets in certain games. For example, a 100% bonus that has 20 times wagering, means that you have to add up your deposit (say, $50) and the bonus ($50) and multiply that total ($100) times 20. That gives you a total of $2,000 to be played before you can request a withdrawal.
